Merrimack County Juvenile Diversion Program

What is Diversion?

Court diversion is an early intervention program that works with first-time juvenile offenders. If accepted into the program, you will only be able to take advantage of it once; Diversion is a one-shot deal.

Diversion recognizes that you made a mistake. The program allows you the opportunity to take responsibility and learn from your mistakes without going to court and potentially having a juvenile record. It is up to you what you make of this opportunity.

The intent of this program is to help youths and their families learn to make better choices, so that they may reach their greatest potential as valuable members of the society.

WARNING:

Diversion is not an easy way out! You and your parents/guardians must be motivated to follow through and complete your diversion plan. You will be referred back to court if you do not successfully complete the program.

Anger Management

The Merrimack County Diversion Program offers a no-cost ten-hour anger management program to foster a better understanding of anger’s origin and one’s own personal anger style. The program’s emphasis promotes self-discipline and control through an examination of the following issues surrounding anger:

Teen Court

Teen Court is a voluntary alternative to the criminal justice system for young people who have committed a crime or violation. In this program, under adult guidance, young people participate in a judicial review and trial, administered by their peers.

Teen court’s goal is to be an effective early intervention in antisocial, delinquent, and criminal behavior. Teen court strives to promote self-esteem, self-improvement, and to foster a positive attitude towards rules and authority. Additionally, it may generate a respect for the legal system and a realization of the consequences of one’s actions. Teen court offers an educational opportunity for all young people – especially those participants who serve as members of the court.
