A Message from the Sheriff
Thank you for visiting our website. Our goal here is to provide you with useful information and educate the public as to exactly what the Merrimack County Office of the Sheriff does. I’d like you to know that since being elected in November of 2006, it has been my goal to make the Merrimack County Sheriff’s Office an efficient and effective law enforcement operation, while practicing the utmost fiscal restraint.
The Office of the Sheriff has a vast and varied mission and we take – responsibilities to the public, other county agencies, and local law enforcement. As you may note, our motto on our letterhead is “Working Together for a Safer Community.” I personally believe this is best done by not only working with other law enforcement agencies, but with everyone – including and very importantly the public. As we begin a new era at the Merrimack County Sheriff’s Office it’s important that the people we serve understand some of the details and basic operations of our office. I believe that the Office of the Sheriff belongs to the people and I’m proudly serving as the steward of this office by the vote of you – the people. Please note that we have made some changes not only in personnel but in some of the ways that we carry out our operations to be more efficient, more effective, and better serve you – the citizens of Merrimack County and the people of New Hampshire.
Current Operations
The Civil Division, which is statutorily charged with serving civil process, is made up of deputies that perform duties that include the service of landlord/tenant writs, orders of notice, divorce paperwork and domestic violence orders, taking adults and juveniles into custody based on court orders, and working with landlord to remove people from apartments and homes through court ordered eviction.
The Criminal Division is charged with assisting communities with investigations, as well as conducting investigations. The Criminal Division includes a specialized investigator who handles sexual assaults and child abuse investigations.
The Transportation Division is transports both Superior Court and District Court defendants to and from court, as well as transporting Merrimack County Department of Corrections inmates.
The Communications Division is open twenty-four hours a day and serves thirteen towns within Merrimack County for dispatch services as well as the Sheriff’s Office, County Attorney, and others.
The Court Security Division handles security and prisoner control at the Merrimack County Superior Court and some of the District Courts in Merrimack County with an emphasis on security of the court house for the public, court staff, and judges.
The Sheriff’s Office also assists the twenty-five towns and two cities in Merrimack County as needed when requested. The Office of the Sheriff also:
- brings the DARE Program the schools.
- is currently working on a rape and domestic violence training program.
- working with hospitals and public health officials developing a pandemic flu plan for
the County of Merrimack.
We will continue to work with many public safety, public awareness and community programs within Merrimack County. As you will note by some of my remarks the Office of the Sheriff is a very busy place. I’m happy to say that the staff shares my interest in doing what we can to make our county a safe place and a service to our citizens the very best that it can be. I’m happy to report that we continue to receive grant money and find additional revenue sources to offset the expenses in our budget as we continue to bring you a most efficient and effective service. It is my goal to keep our citizens informed of what the Office of the Sheriff is doing. Please feel free to visit our website and our office to find out how we can be of service to you.
Thank you,
Scott E. Hilliard, Sheriff
